Gaga/dancers & Movement Lab

The workshop begins with a Gaga/dancers class in which we deepens dancers’ awareness of physical sensations, expands their palette of available movement options, enhances their ability to modulate their energy and engage their explosive power, and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures. The class employs the specific vocabulary and skills that are part and parcel of a dancer’s knowledge. The layering of familiar skills with Gaga tasks presents dancers with fresh challenges, and throughout the class we visit more unfamiliar places and ways of moving as well, unlocking the endlessness of possibilities. Dancers are guided to connect their effort to pleasure and to discover the virtue of silliness.

We will then move into an improvisation session in which we explore how to engage the sensing body in real-time compositional structures. Using improvisational games, tasks, and scores, we create an environment that ignites our sense of play, individually and together, to make expressive, dynamic, and meaningful choices. In this experimental improvisation, we become both the performer and the composer. Throughout the workshop, we develop the ability to intuitively sense, create, and release tension, thereby unlocking the full potential of our bodies in relation to space, time, and sound. By intertwining our compositional skills with an unending sense of curiosity, we establish profound and multilayered connections that enrich our exploration and growth.
